Mapping the different aspects of your social identity and how they may complement or contradict one another can help you understand how simple vs. complex your social identity is. <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1207\/S15327957PSPR0602_01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> has found that people with higher levels of &#8220;social identity complexity&#8221; (i.e., belong to groups that seem to contradict or hold each other in check &#8211; like being a more progressive Republican or conservative Democrat) tend to show more openness and tolerance for out-groups.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t15 minutes\r\n                    <h3>Change the Channel<\/h3><p>Locate and follow three new, fair (well-intentioned, informed, and decent) sources of news and opinion that differ from you politically. Be prepared to turn to them whenever news breaks this week and you are inclined to turn to your comfortable news sources. You can locate some of these sources by checking out reporting from news groups like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allsides.com\/unbiased-balanced-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All Sides<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theflipside.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flip Side<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h4>The Science Behind It<\/h4><p>Our news habits profoundly affect our understanding of a highly complex world. Most of us have a few sources we automatically turn to out of habit because of our upbringing. It is comforting to do so.<\/p>\r\n<p>But all news has some bias, so it is helpful to intentionally change channels or seek out alternative sources when news breaks. Getting multiple well-informed viewpoints can give us a more accurate understanding of our world. Seek out contrary, albeit legitimate, reporting on events.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t2 hours\r\n                    <h3>Get a Date, But Not Just Any Date&#8230; A &#8220;Feedback Date&#8221;<\/h3><p>Ask a close friend or confidante to sit down with you over a coffee for a &#8220;feedback date&#8221; and invite them to offer you frank, fair, and friendly feedback about the contradictions they see in your life. For instance, I study and teach constructive conflict resolution, but it all goes out the window when someone steals my long-sought parking space in NYC. @*$%%?#%$!! Do you complain about others&#8217; lack of punctuality, tidiness, or tolerance but rarely walk this talk? Remember to keep an open mind, as this is a difficult task. Ask yourself, &#8220;What can I learn from this? Are these contradictions so bad? How might they serve me?&#8221; If you can&#8217;t get a date today, at least plan for one in the future. Put it in your calendar so that you will actually stick to it!<\/p>\r\n<h4>The Science Behind It<\/h4><p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/communication.iresearchnet.com\/exposure-to-communication-content\/consistency-theories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decades<\/a>, research has documented that humans prefer consistency over inconsistency, particularly regarding how our values, attitudes, and behaviors fit together. We simply don&#8217;t like to be seen as inconsistent (wishy-washy!). However, no one is perfect, and we all show inconsistencies every day. And becoming aware of our contradictions can make us more tolerant of others!<\/p>\r\n<h2>\r\n\t\tSet a daily reminder\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t<p>Get daily exercise reminders on your phone or email throughout The Challenge to stay on track.<\/p>\r\n<ul> \t\r\n<li>Better navigate politically polarizing situations<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li>Repair strained relationships with family and friends<\/li>\r\n\r\n<li>Become a less reactive and more effective communicator<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\t<p>By submitting your cell phone number, you are agreeing to receive periodic text messages from Starts With Us.
