Your State’s Primary is Coming Soon. Are You Prepared?

Did you know that there are votes for 18 Governors, 20 Senators, and 226 Members of Congress this May and June — in elections that most people ignore? The main Election Day might not be until November, but it’s time to tune in today, because primary elections are happening across over half the country in just the next 2 months.

It may feel like your vote doesn’t matter, but your choice to stay home or show up for the primary could be the most important decision you make in elections this year.

Whether you’re in a red, blue, or purple state, whether your representative is running for reelection or you’re voting on brand new people, there are still ways that you can make a difference in who’s leading us.

Let’s break down how your vote can advance a Builders mindset in the primaries:

You’re definitely picking new Senators and Governors in a dozen states.

In 12 different states, the current Senator or Governor isn’t running for reelection, so the seat is anyone’s game. These states like Ohio, California, and New Mexico (plus a ton of districts where Members of Congress are retiring) will be represented by new leaders, no matter what, so your vote in the primary is essential to make sure new Builders make it to the ballot in November.

Tired of the status quo? Decide if your current leaders need to be challenged.

If you live in states like Georgia, Maine, or Pennsylvania, you have a Senator or Governor who wants to be reelected. You can vote to support that person in their primary, or you can decide who goes head to head with them in November if you’re ready for change. There are also probably mayors, state representatives, and other leaders who want your support, and it’s time to ask if yourself if they’ve earned it. Take the time now to look up the challengers, and see if there’s a better Builder you’d rather represent you.

The primary can even be more important than the general election in some states.

In states or districts that are skewed heavily towards one party, the primary is actually the place where you pick your leaders. If the Republican or the Democrat is likely to win no matter what, then choosing that Republican or Democrat is what really counts. So if you feel like your vote doesn’t matter in the general election, the primary is especially important.

Now is the time to start paying attention.

Voting in primaries is a powerful way for Builders to be engaged citizens, and we’re officially in primary season! By the end of June, more than half of states’ primaries will be over, so don’t wait to get informed.
